Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Regional Director-General, Maritimes Region, wishes to advise the public of the following changes for angling sport fish in Nova Scotia for 2015.

  • Tusket River, from the highway bridge crossing the canal at the southern end of Lake Vaughn downstream to the powerhouse dam, including tributaries.

 

Daily bag limits, size limits and gear restrictions for trout

 

(1)The daily bag limit for all trout species will be five (5) fish, with a possession limit of five (see exceptions below). Some size limits apply (see exceptions below); and

(2)The use of bait is prohibited for fishing trout from September 1 to September 30 in all inland and tidal waters of the Province, except for the Cape Breton Highlands Management Area and the Bras d’Or Lakes.

 

Exceptions

 

(1)The entire Province except for the Cape Breton Highlands Management Area:

  • From September 1 to September 30 the daily bag limit for brook trout (speckled) isreduced to zero (hook and release only).

 

(2)The Cape Breton Highlands Management Area:

  • From January 1 to December 31, the daily bag limit for brook trout (speckled) is ten (10) fish (bait allowed during September 1 to September 30). For the purpose of this Notice, the Cape Breton Highlands Management Area is the area enclosed by the following boundaries:

1.the 105 Highway from the St. Anns exit (exit 11) to the Cabot Trail to the Hunters Mountain exit (exit 7) to the Cabot Trail;

2.the Cabot Trail Highway;

3.the Victoria County Line; and

4.the Cape Breton Highlands National Park boundary, but does not include the following waters which are located within the Cape Breton Highlands:

  • Baddeck River, North Branch Baddeck River, and Canes Pond, not including tributaries;
  • Barachois River, not including tributaries;
  • Indian Brook downstream from the confluence of the East and West Branches, not including tributaries;
  • Ingonish River, not including tributaries;
  • Middle River including tributaries; and
  • North River downstream from a point at the Benches marked by a fishery officer, not including tributaries.

(32)Artificial fly or single hook unbaited lure with a barbed or barbless hook only from May 15 to September 30:

  • Baddeck River, upstream from the Highway 105 bridge including the North Branch Baddeck River and Canes Pond;
  • Middle River, upstream from the Highway 105 bridge to the Cabot Trail Highway bridge near Findlayson, including tributaries, but not including Indian Brook.

(33)Artificial fly only from May 15 to October 31:

  • North River, upstream from the Tidal Pool including the East Branch North River, Middle Branch North River, and West Branch North River, not including tributaries to those rivers.

(34)Artificial fly or single hook unbaited lure with a barbed or barbless hook only from June 1 to September 30:

  • North Aspy River, Victoria County, from the Bay St. Lawrence Highway bridge to the Cape Breton Highlands Park boundary.

(35)Artificial fly (barbless hook) only from October 1 to October 31:

  • Baddeck River, upstream from the Highway 105 bridge including the North Branch Baddeck River and Canes Pond;
  • Middle River, upstream from the Highway 105 bridge to the Cabot Trail Highway bridge near Findlayson, including tributaries but not including Indian Brook.

 

FISHING AT NIGHT

 

Fishing at night is prohibited between two (2) hours after sunset and two (2) hours before sunrise except in the

following areas:

 

(1)To facilitate smallmouth bass angling, fishing at night is permitted during the open season in:

  • Banook Lake, Loon Lake (near Waverley), Micmac Lake, and Rocky Lake (near Waverley), Halifax County;
  • Mersey River, Queens County downstream from Lake Rossignol to the dam at Cowie Falls;
  • Ogden, Parr and Petes Lake, Yarmouth County;
  • Salmon River Lake, Digby County;
  • Black River Lake, Little River Lake and Methals Lake, Kings County;
  • Panuke Lake, Hants County.

 

(2)           To facilitate brown trout angling, fishing at night is permitted during the open season in the:

  • Mersey River, Queens County downstream from Lake Rossignol to the dam at Cowie Falls;
  • Cornwallis River, Kings County;
  • Stewiacke River, Colchester County, from the Landsdowne Bridge downstream to the East Pollack bridge at Stewiacke East.

           

(3)To facilitate brown trout angling, fishing at night is permitted from April 15 to August 31 only in:

  • River John, Pictou County, from the West Branch bridge downstream to the Welsford bridge near Welsford;
  • Salmon River, Cape Breton County from the highway bridge near Rock Elm to its confluence with the Mira River;
  • James River, Antigonish County, from 23 m below the water supply dam at grid reference 568078 5050765 downstream to the bridge at Addington Forks (immediately above its confluence with the West River). Refer to map Merigomish 11E/09 (NAD 1927).

 

(4)To facilitate brown trout angling, fishing at night is permitted from May 15 to August 31 only in:

  • River Philip, Cumberland County, upstream from the Mountain Road bridge (Spencer Bridge), not including tributaries.
